Vocational Education and Training (VET) at ABHS:

At Asquith Boys High School, we are proud to offer VET Courses in Construction, Entertainment and Hospitality - Cookery.

VET courses provide a pathway into wide range of occupations. Studying a VET course at school can even make it easier to get that all important part time job to help you get through your university study. 

VET programs in schools are laying foundation for the workforce of tomorrow, developing skilled and adaptable employees for the future.

Vocational education and training programs, including school based apprenticeships, traineeships and work placements, are a great way for students to experience work and undertake formal, on the job training as part of their HSC.

Around 80 per cent of students undertaking HSC VET are enrolled in Industry Curriculum Framework courses in Construction, Metal and Engineering, Hospitality, Information Technology, Business Services, Tourism, Retail and Entertainment. These courses have a mandatory Work Placement component.

VET Hospitality - Cookery (Stage 6)

VET Hospitality provides students with the opportunity to gain industry-recognised national vocational qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework as part of their NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC). The qualifications available in the Hospitality Curriculum Framework are:

  • SIT20316 Certificate II in Hospitality
  • SIT20416 Certificate II in Kitchen Operations
  • SIT30816 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery – Statement of Attainment only
  • SIT30916 Certificate III in Catering Operations – Statement of Attainment only.

Asquith Boys High School has three kitchens, one of which is fully commercial and is utilised throughout the VET Hospitality course.

VET Construction (Stage 6)

Construction is designed to introduce learners to the recognised trade callings in the construction industry and provide meaningful credit in a construction industry Australian Apprenticeship. It provides a pathway to the primary trades in the construction industry. The course includes the attainment of the white card qualification which is a requirement for entering a construction site.

This course provides an avenue for students to enter a range of trades in the construction industry or as a worker in the civil construction industry.

By successfully completing the VET Construction course, students will achieve a:

  • CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways (Full Certificate)
  • Statement of Attainment towards CPC20120 Certificate II in Construction

This course is ATAR eligible and requires students to complete a minimum of 70 hours of industry work placement.

VET Entertainment Industry (Stage 6)

Entertainment Industry reflects the role of individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in providing services for the entertainment industry.

It applies to work in lighting and audio, vision systems, staging and staging operations, live and broadcast production, administration and technical operations and customer service.

The course includes the attainment of the white card qualification which is a requirement for entry to some workplaces. Upon completion of the course, students will attain:

  • CUA30420 Certificate III in Live Production and Services

Asquith Boys High School has made significant investment in new technology, teacher specialisation and upgrades to our hall in order to offer the VET Entertainment course, and we are very excited to offer this course to Year 11 and 12 students starting from 2024.
